UN HQ, Manhattan, New York, United States | May 7, 2025: Amb. Lewis Garseedah Brown has paid a courtesy call on his counterpart H. E. Amb. Tesfaye Hilma Sabo, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the United Nations and Chair of the African Group for May 2025.

During the conversation, Amb. Brown extended warm felicitations on behalf of H. E. Joseph N. Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to H. E. Taye Atshe Selassie,  President of Ethiopia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He mentioned the long standing diplomatic relation that has subsisted between the two African nations. Amb. Brown recalled the struggles endured by the two oldest independent African nations to fight for justice and independence of other African nations then. He assured his Ethiopian counterpart that Liberia will always support Ethiopia’s agenda as a traditional partner and expressed no doubt that Ethiopia stands to reciprocate the same to Liberia.

The PR of Liberia to the UN reminded his Ethiopian counterpart of Liberia’s candidature for a Non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the term 2026-2027, and extended an invite as Chair of the African Group to attend the climax of Liberia’s campaign on May 27, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. He concluded that Liberia and Ethiopia could explore areas of trade and investment to further deepen the longstanding relationship.

In response, Amb. Tesfaye Hilma Sabo expressed huge excitement of meeting his Liberian counterpart and expressed warm felicitations on behalf of the President of Ethiopia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the President of the Republic of Liberia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He committed his country’s support for Liberia’s seat on the UNSC and further said given that the two countries are working together a lot can be achieved at many levels for the success of the global community.

Amb. Sabo assured his Liberian counterpart that he is excited to attend and participate in ceremonies marking the climax of Liberia’s campaign for a Non-permanent seat on the UNSC scheduled for May 27, at the UN HQ. He stressed that this will demonstrate to the world that Africa is a united continent wherein brothers look out for brothers.

He thanked Amb. Brown for proposing a bilateral meeting to explore areas of investment interests for the good of both nations.  He continued that Africa should keep standing tall for the success of its people noting that “...if we can not forge the collective interests of our people then we’re doomed”. Amb. Sabo summed up his points by wishing Amb. Brown well in his endeavors as Liberia takes up a herculean tasks for the good of the African continent and expressed hope that the tide of African solidarity is strong.
