Delivered by H.E. Lewis G. Brown, II Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to the United Nations

Mr. President, Excellencies
Eighty years ago, the United Nations was established as one of humanity’s most significant creations, a beacon of hope, cooperation, and shared responsibility in an
often-divided world. It has withstood the checkered and torturous test of time, navigating storms of conflict, economic turmoil, and global crises. And yet, while its endurance is remarkable, an institution that has carried such immense responsibility over the decades inevitably accumulates dust and rust. It is time to shake off that weight, to reinvigorate the United Nations so that it may remain fit for purpose, not just today, but for the next eighty years and beyond.

The UN80 initiative presents a crucial opportunity to refine, streamline, and fortify
the UN System—making it more effective, cost-efficient, and responsive to address the perennial challenges of our world. Hunger, disease, poverty, and conflict persist. Climate change continues to reshape our planet with alarming urgency. But as we seek solutions, we must remain vigilant that whatever strategies
are pursued—be it budgetary cuts, harmonizing overlapping mandates, or redefining our approach—the UN must have a more strategic objective: not just to survive, but to thrive.

Over the next few months, the decisions we make will determine the strength, longevity, and relevance of the United Nations. In this regard, Liberia emphasizes the importance of finding consensus on contentious issues in the Pact for the Future. Reforming the international financial architecture to foster economic equity, advancing the goals of FFD4 to ensure sustainable development financing, and championing climate justice so that the burdens of climate change do not fall disproportionately on vulnerable nations—these are critical components of a future-ready UN.

Liberia firmly supports a UN80 that puts people first—a United Nations that values humanity over finances, that prioritizes multilateralism, and that commits to bequeathing a vibrant UN System to the next generation. This generation has been entrusted with the Task of the Future. Our responsibility is not simply to make the UN lean and efficient, but to safeguard its existence, ensuring it remains relevant and robust in facing the challenges of tomorrow.

As we move forward, let us act decisively, let us act together, and let us ensure that the United Nations stands prepared not just for today, but for the next 80 years
and beyond.

Thank you.
